The importance of a pattern tester
A pattern testers role is part of the crucial final step in the process of releasing a new sewing pattern to market. During this testing period, the designer obtains valuable information such as identifying fit and design issues across a wide range of sizes and body types as well as catching any inaccuracy's in the sewing instructions and pattern information.
As a pattern tester you will be expected to:
- Print the pattern on your home printer or at a copy shop and assemble as instructed.
- Follow the instructions to cut and sew the garment in your chosen size and fabrication.
- Participate and engage with other sewists in a Facebook Group during the testing period (Optional).
- Take notes along the way if you encounter any issues with fit, sizing or clarity of instructions.
- Take clear photos of the final garment and submit them to Moda Poiesis via the online portal.
- Submit your feedback regarding any fit issues, clarity of instructions or pattern via the Pattern Feedback Form.
If you are selected to be part of the pattern testing group, the pattern along with detailed instructions will be emailed to you at that time.
Materials you will receive
- A4 & US Letter compatible size PDF file with size layers
- A0 size PDF file (84.1cm x 118.9 cm | 33.1" x 46.8") with size layers
- Projector PDF file
- A detailed guide (in English) including written instructions with visuals, how to print your files, size guidance, fabric usage charts, fabric recommendations and tools needed.
During this testing period, I also encourage you to keep in touch with any questions you may have. You are also welcome, but not required, to join the Facebook group if available. Here you will be able to converse, share or ask questions with other sewists about their experience with the pattern.
Pattern Testing Timeline
You will find the specified dates for the pattern testing period at the top of the Pattern Tester Application. Generally, the process will last 2 weeks which includes the time for you to make any necessary samples, cut and sew the garment in your final fabric and submit your photos and Pattern Feedback Form.
Permission to use your submitted photos for marketing purposes
While the pattern testing process requires you to submit photos of the finished garment for us to review the fit and style, you will have to option when applying to choose whether or not to give us permission to use those photos for marketing purposes on our social media channels such as Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. If you consent and your photo is shared, you will of course be given credit.
Compensation
We greatly appreciate your time, effort and skills as a sewist. Although we are unable to provide monetary compensation at this time, after completing the pattern testing period you will receive:
- The final watermark free PDF pattern.
- Any future updates or expansions to the pattern.
- An additional PDF pattern of your choice from my collection.
- My hope is for you to have a positive experience while creating a garment that you will love as well as possibly learning some new techniques and connecting with fellow sewists.
